History

In the fall of 2013, the Office of the Provost convened a Campus Conversation on Undergraduate Education to gather input and ideas on the future of undergraduate learning at Illinois.

During the first phase of this project, nearly 600 faculty, students, and staff took part in creating comprehensive visions of the Illinois Student and Experience. The report we circulated in February 2014 synthesized these inspiring ideas for strengthening a distinctive undergraduate education befitting a world-class research university with a land-grant mission.

Under the guidance of a campus-wide Steering Committee, we formed six working groups in the spring of 2014 to explore topics such as Integrative, Interdisciplinary, & Experiential Curricula, Student Passion & Transformation, Growing the Professional Kernel, An International Campus in a Global World, Education for Society’s Grand Challenges, and Access & Affordability.

These recommendations provided the basis for seven current initiatives including an innovative 3-year pilot in Grand Challenge Learning at the General Education level.
